The Dirtiest Things in Your Home Aren’t the Toilet
We scrub the bathroom weekly and vacuum the carpet when it looks dusty. That’s backwards — the toilet gets disinfected, the carpet almost never does.
1. Your carpet
Research by Dr Philip Tierno, microbiologist and immunologist at NYU Langone Medical Center, puts the average carpet at roughly 200,000 bacteria per square inch — about 4,000 times what you’d find on a toilet seat. It builds up because we shed around 1.5 million skin cells an hour, and that becomes food for everything living in the pile.
What to do: vacuuming lifts surface debris, but it doesn’t sanitise. Hot-water extraction (steam cleaning) every 12 months — more often with kids or pets — is what actually reaches the base of the fibres.
2. Your mattress
A typical used mattress can hold anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million dust mites, according to figures published by the CDC and Ohio State University. They aren’t parasites — they eat the dead skin you shed overnight — but their droppings are a common trigger for asthma, eczema and hay fever.
What to do: wash sheets weekly at 60°C or higher, use a zippered mattress protector, air the room daily to drop the humidity mites need, and have the mattress professionally cleaned periodically.
Worth knowing: the popular claim that a mattress doubles in weight from mites over ten years has no published study behind it. The mite numbers above do.
3. Your pillow
A study by the London NHS Trust found that after two years of use, up to a third of a pillow’s weight can be made up of dust mites, their droppings, dead skin and bacteria.
What to do: replace pillows roughly every 1–2 years, wash pillow protectors weekly, and wash the pillow itself if the care label allows.
The pattern is simple: the things we clean least are the things we spend the most hours touching. Prioritise what you sleep on and walk on.
A realistic cleaning rhythm
- Weekly: bed linen washed hot, floors vacuumed, bathrooms disinfected
- Monthly: mattress vacuumed and aired, pillow protectors washed
- Yearly: carpet steam clean, mattress deep clean, upholstery refresh
