Beating Mould in a Humid Climate: A Practical Guide

Busihive Team3 min read

If you live somewhere warm and humid, you know the deal: humid air and the wet season make mould a recurring houseguest. It's not just unsightly — it can affect air quality and health. Here's how to tackle it properly.

Find the moisture, not just the mould. Mould is a symptom; moisture is the cause. Bathrooms, behind furniture against external walls, around windows and in poorly ventilated rooms are the usual suspects. Wiping it away without fixing airflow just delays its return.

Clean it safely. For hard surfaces, many Australian households use a diluted vinegar solution, which can penetrate porous surfaces better than bleach. Wear gloves, open a window, and never dry-brush mould — that just sends spores into the air.

Then attack the humidity. Run exhaust fans during and after showers, open windows on dry days, use the squeegee on shower glass, and consider a dehumidifier for problem rooms. Keep furniture slightly off external walls so air can move.

Know your limits. Small spots on tile grout are a DIY job. Widespread mould, mould on ceilings, or anything in the air-conditioning is a job for a pro — both for your health and to do it properly.

When to call Busihive. A deep clean or special service from a vetted pro can treat mould-prone areas thoroughly and set you up with a fresh baseline.
